Welcome to the webpage for the Swanage Green Seafront Stabilisation and Shore Road Enhancement Projects. Here you can find information about both projects, from their early development in 2023 through to the present day.
The Swanage Green Seafront Stabilisation Scheme is a major investment in the future of Swanage, combining essential safety works with improvements to one of the town’s most valued coastal areas. The project will protect and enhance Sandpit Field, Weather Station Field, and the Spa beach hut area, helping to ensure these important public spaces remain safe, accessible, and enjoyable for residents and visitors for years to come.
The Green Seafront area is experiencing ongoing ground movement and slope instability. Cracks in retaining walls, uneven ground surfaces, erosion, and other signs of deterioration are affecting the stability of the land and supporting structures.
Without intervention:
Parts of the area could become unsafe for public use.
Repair and maintenance costs would continue to rise.
Swanage could lose valuable spaces used for recreation, community events, and tourism.
Damage to infrastructure and public amenities could become more severe over time.
This webpage was originally created to provide information about the Green Seafront Stabilisation Scheme. However, since 2025 it has also included information about a second project that is being delivered alongside it:
Swanage Green Seafront Stabilisation Scheme – Swanage Town Council
Shore Road Enhancements Project – Dorset Council
During public engagement on the first two options for the Green Seafront Stabilisation Scheme in 2023, as well as through consultation on the Swanage Masterplan, significant concerns were raised by the public about the safety of pedestrians and other users of the northern section of Shore Road as well an opportunity to integrate traffic management into such a large project. In response, Swanage Town Council asked Dorset Council to consider potential alterations and improvements to the area. This led to the development of the Shore Road Enhancements Project.
Use the tiles below to explore background information, consultation materials, project updates, and much more.
