Options for Shore Road
Options for Shore Road
Drawings are provided for each option that set out the key features including information (as applicable) on the following:
Optional across all options:
Gyratory System: Implement a one-way system on Ulwell Road (southbound) and Clifton Road (westbound). Improving the junction of Ulwell Road and Clifton Road to facilitate easier pedestrian crossing and vehicular access.
Bus Infrastructure: Improve bus stops and reroute buses on to De Mouhlam Road to better serve the more populated area.
20mph zone: Introduce a 20mph zone along seafront to help encourage lower traffic speeds. This may also help to reduce ‘street clutter’ and the need for signs and road markings. This would be subject to an additional traffic regulation order (TRO).
1. Full Vehicular Closure with Provision for pedestrians and cyclists
Scheme Extents: The closure to public vehicles would start south of the Ocean Bay slipway, allowing bi-directional access to the slipway and Shore House Apartments. A ‘soft closure’ would be implemented at the junction of Ulwell Road and Clifton Road to highlight that it is ‘access only’ from this point.
Traffic Restrictions: Closure to public vehicles on Shore Road between Ocean Beach and Banjo Pier. Victoria Avenue remains available for bi-directional parking search traffic with a turning head on Shore Road at Banjo Pier.
Footways: Footway widths are significantly increased on both sides of Shore Road. Up to around 4.5m on the beach side and 3m adjacent to the green seafront.
Parking: Parking is removed from Shore Road. Disabled parking spaces and short term set down / pick up spaces created on both sides of Victoria Avenue.
Cycling: 3m bi-directional cycle path along Shore Road that can be used by service vehicles for street cleansing and emergencies.
Bus Services: Reroute buses on to DeMouhlam Road with new bus stops to better serve the more populated area.
Placemaking: Key locations enhanced with amenities like seating, planters, and improved paving. Linear place-making feature introduced to rear of beach side footway.
Option One - Aerial View
Option 1 - Cross Section of Road
2. Partial Closure with Southbound Vehicular One-Way System
Scheme Extents: The one-way for vehicles would start at the junction of Ulwell Road and Seaward Road continuing to the junction of Victoria Avenue with DeMoulham Road.
Traffic Restrictions: One way traffic on Ulwell Road, Shore Road and Victoria Avenue between Seaward Road and DeMoulham Road.
Footways: Footway widths are increased on both sides of Shore Road. Up to around 4m on the beach side and 2.5m adjacent to the Green Seafront. Improvements to the junction of Ulwell Road and Clifton Road to facilitate easier pedestrian crossing and vehicular access. Key access points to Green Seafront will be highlighted with pedestrian crossings and improved surface materials.
Parking: Parking is removed from Shore Road. Disabled parking spaces and short term set down / pick up spaces created on one side of Victoria Avenue between DeMoulham and Shore Roads.
Cycling: 1.5m northbound cycleway along Shore Road. Cyclists can utilise carriageway for southbound trips.
Traffic Calming: Install features to reduce vehicle speeds, through the use of raised crossings and changes in surface materials to highlight pedestrian movements.
Bus Services: Reroute northbound buses on to DeMouhlam Road with new bus stops.
Placemaking: Enhance key locations with amenities to create ‘meeting locations’ along the seafront. Improve seating, cycle parking and planting/street art. Introduction of higher quality surface materials to improve streetscape.
Option 2 - Aerial Design View
3. Two Way Traffic with Parking Removed
Scheme Extents: Changes to the streetscape will extend from just south of Ocean Bay Slipway to the junction of Victoria Avenue with DeMoulham Road.
Footways: Footway widths are increased on the green seafront side of Shore Road up to around 2.5m. Beach Side of Shore Road remains as existing.
Parking: Parking is removed from Shore Road. Disabled parking spaces and short term set down / pick up spaces created on one side of Victoria Avenue between DeMoulham and Shore Roads.
Traffic Calming: Carriageway narrowing at pedestrian crossing points to slow vehicle speeds. Vehicles give way to oncoming traffic, alternating between north and southbound traffic giving way. Raised crossing at access to Spa beach hut area.
Placemaking: Enhance key locations with amenities to create ‘meeting locations’ along the seafront. Minimal locations to introduce seating, cycle parking and planting/street art. Introduction of higher quality surface materials to improve streetscape. There is a lower opportunity for this between key locations with this option.

4. Retain as it currently is
No changes are made to the road layout, parking or infrastructure along Shore Road.
