Studland Bay Marine Conservation Talk with Natural England

About this event

We are delighted that Ellie James and Maxine Chavner from Natural England will be presenting an overview of Natural England’s condition assessment process for Marine Protected Areas, the features and conservation objectives for Studland Bay Marine Conservation Zone and the outcomes of the first condition assessment of the site since designation.

This is an ideal opportunity for anyone who wants to learn more about how our marine environments are monitored through strict condition assessments: Marine Biology and Ocean and Earth Science students, ecologists, conservationists – and anyone who is curious to know more about the wonders of Dorset’s largest seagrass meadow and what lies beneath the waves!  Book your place here

Studland's Ocean Meadows - the science beneath the surface

We are excited to announce that key members of the SBMP Research & Monitoring Group will be taking us on an underwater learning journey through a series of FREE 1 hour evening online talks. Watch this space for the next dates and how to register for the talks!  A great introduction for anyone interested in marine biology or the science behind the project. Find out more about the work of the academic institutions and organisations that use Studland as their natural laboratory.

You can watch a recording of the talk by Dr Ken Collins, University of Southampton talk from the 18th June 2025 here

In November 2025 we had a fascinating talk by Jessica Churchill-Bissett, Head of Marine Conservation and Rachel-Louisa Joyce, Principal Marine Conservation Manager of the Marine Management Organisation (MMO). Together they explained why and how the MMO work with the SBMP as well as looking at the wider marine based work of the MMO.  You can watch a recording of the talk from the 12 November 2025 here

Our most recent talk was by Neil Garrick-Maidment, Executive Director and Founder of The Seahorse Trust who took us on a journey of understanding Studland’s amazing little ‘horses of the sea’, the seahorses. He shows why he has studied these amazing animals for 53 years, why they have enchanted him for so long and why he and so many others have worked so hard to protect Studland Bay to increase the seagrass and to ensure the future of these enigmatic fish.

You can watch a recording of the talk by Neil Garrick-Maidment from the 4th February 2026 here

Our next talk will be by Natural England focussing on the recent condition assessment and importance of the marine habitat within the Marine Conservation Zone (MCZ) and Voluntary No Anchor Zone (VNAZ).  Scheduled for Wednesday 22 April 2026 5.30-6.30pm - to book your place just use this link
