Direction of action for Weymouth Area Waste Reduction Group

Do you agree with the following vision for us to work towards? - Weymouth halves its carbon footprint and the waste it generates by the end of 2021. In and around Weymouth local businesses have cut the amount of packaging waste and single use items leaving their premises by 50% in one year. Local residents support businesses that do this and challenge those who don't. Local residents shop smart, only buying things they need, that come with minimal packaging and can be reused.

The group wants to be bold with its ambition.

Here are a couple of ideas (some that have been discussed previously) of things we could do to help grab peoples attention and achieve our vision. Please tick which ones you prefer as well as add your suggestions in the following question.

Signs up on bins saying how much waste was generated in Weymouth litter bins last month and challenge people to reduce it for next month by (insert call to action) - we can then change the signs each month and show the percentage increase or decrease

Create a series of videos of Weymouth residents and businesses doing our call to action and why they do - to highlight action being taken by locals already and inspire others to do the same

Stencil out half a footprint on the ground/beach at key places in and around Weymouth to demonstrate that we want to half Weymouth's Carbon Footprint by 2021

Commission a local artist to create something that grabs peoples attention

Create a giant compost bin full of "compostables" to demonstrate that they don't compost and challenge Weymouth to think higher up the waste hierarchy

Create a visual metaphor to challenge Weymouth (e.g. turn the daily bus load of waste collected around Weymouth into a mini)

We talked in the meeting about the importance of having a clear call to action - something that we want to ask local residents and businesses to do to help reduce waste in the area. We talked about the fact that having too many calls to action at once can be overwhelming and put people off.
