What is the project?

This project sets out to improve the station forecourt and sustainable transport links with community engagement at the heart of the project. It is coordinated by Dorset Coast Forum in collaboration with the project partners.

Why are we doing this these improvement works?

The local authorities and stakeholders are well aware that the station area needs improvement to make it work better for local business and the community as well as attract visitors to the town. There is a collective will to make improvements and make the area a more welcoming and safer place to use and bring economic benefit.

Where is the money coming from?

The total project fund is £596,000 which includes a £450k grant from the South Western Railway Customer and Communities Improvement Fund (SWR CCIF) and additional funding from partners; Dorset Council, Public Health Dorset, Weymouth BID and Weymouth Town Council. Dorset Coast Forum is leading on the project in partnership with the funding partners.

    What will the improvements include?

The Weymouth Station Gateway project improvements aim to benefit local businesses, encourage new businesses to the area and increase tourism by improving:

    • The Visitor Experience
    • Traffic and Sustainable Transport Infrastructure
    • Links to Businesses
    • Wayfinding and pathways through to the town centre and beach front

Weymouth Train Station forecourt - This includes looking at the car park, drop-off zone, taxi waiting area, bus integration, improving pedestrian and cycle links and traffic flow within the forecourt. This does not include the station building itself or road traffic flow outside the forecourt.

Creating an attractive walkway and cycle link from a narrow area which links two major business areas and runs alongside a section of closed rail line. With the support from Public Health Dorset we aim to transform this area to an attractive and safe bike and walkway. By integrating the closed lines with a community-led design we will showcase Weymouth’s rail heritage and provide a pleasant, safe access between King St and Jubilee Close.

We will be working to make this a safer area and will include Dorset Police and the Community Safety team when developing the designs for this project.

    Why is consultation needed?

Listening to the community is key to the success of Dorset Coast Forum’s projects.  The local community is at the heart of these projects and we want residents, visitors, businesses and all partners to ‘have your say’ on what the community needs from this project.

The Weymouth Station Gateway design will be based upon the aspirations of the local community. Views from the community and visitors to Weymouth will be collated and reviewed by the project team to ensure that improvements meet those aspirations and requirements.

Will the station be fully open during the work?

We expect the station to be fully operational during the construction period although inevitably there will be some disruption as work progresses. South Western Railway will communicate any limitations and changes during this period as to avoid as much public disruption for rail users as possible.

    How can I get involved?

Your feedback is important to this project and we encourage you to have your say by completing the online survey or a paper survey at the train station. Survey forms and a box to post the forms are located by the ticket office.

The closing date for this survey is the 31st August
