Litter Free Dorset has been working in partnership with the Environment Agency, Wessex Water, Dorset Council, and Weymouth Town Council, to identify and tackle some of the factors that could be impacting seawater quality at Weymouth Beach. These include a wide range of factors such as: litter, surface water run-off, pollution from boats, and fouling from dogs, seabirds, and horses.
This has involved engagement with various groups, including:
Partnering with beachfront shops to promote the toy library and reduce single-use plastic
Working with fish and chip shops to share messaging about the impact of gull fouling
Promoting responsible boat use with Weymouth Marina members and harbour visitors
Raising awareness of the Public Space Protection Orders related to gull feeding
As part of this ongoing project, we are keen to work in partnership with local stables and equestrian centres to carry out research into horse-riding activities on Weymouth Beach and promote responsible practices. We would be grateful if you could complete the short survey below, which will give us an idea of current activities and help us to plan next steps.
