Charmouth and North Swanage have been selected for funding through the Coastal Transition Accelerator Programme (CTAP), supported by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and funded by the Environment Agency (EA).
Coastal change is a nationwide challenge, but Charmouth and North Swanage are uniquely positioned to get a head start. Future Coast Dorset will help these communities manage their changing coasts and become more resilient. With £3 million in funding, the project will enhance infrastructure, improve beach access, develop and improve awareness of coastal risk and create plans for the future.
This initiative is a significant step towards a resilient and thriving coastline for future generations.
The Coastal Transition Accelerator Programme supports the Environment Agency’s FCERM Strategy, which provides a longer-term vision of how we will better protect and prepare homes and businesses from flooding and coastal change and create climate resilient places.

We would like to hear your views, comments, and concerns regarding how this project can deliver on a range of options to help Charmouth communities adapt to coastal change.
Round 1 engagement, which ran from May to July 2024, collected views from the public and stakeholders on developing a list of options as part of an Outline Business Case. The Outline Business Case was approved in November 2024, allowing the programme to begin.
For Round 2, the team are now keen to hear from you on your views on coastal issues where you live and how the programme can help the Charmouth community prepare and plan for coastal change.
Please share your views by completing this survey.
This survey has been extended and will now close on Sunday 13th July.

Funding Options -a quick poll!
The following 10 options are being investigated for their viability.
The project team have already identified 6 options we plan to deliver based on last year's public consultation events, thank you if you helped determine what they were. In no particular order these are:
Beach, river, cliff monitoring and behaviour assessments.
Planning and building control mapping and guidance
Adaptation plan
Access improvements at West Beach
Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre (CHCC) and car park roll back and pop-up
Stakeholder Steering Group (e.g. coastal change or cliff management committee)
One option, re-opening the riverside path on the East of to the River Char, has been looked into, but cannot be delivered by the project currently.
We have a remaining 10 options listed below that we are still testing for their viability and preference,. These have also been presented at the in-person event at St Andrews Community hall on the 18th June, the online presentation on the 1st July and the "baseline on the beach" event on the 3rd July.
Please can you provide your feedback and preferences by choosing your top 3 options from the list below. This will help the project team with the delivery and direction of the project in the future.
Want to know more? The presentation from the online event on the 1st July has been recorded and is available on our Have Your Say webpage or on the Dorset Coast Forum YouTube page.
